A Methodology for Testing Intrusion Detection Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) attempt to identify unauthorized use, misuse, and abuse of computer systems. In response to the growth in the use and development of IDSs, we have developed a methodology for testing IDSs. The methodology consists of techniques from the eld of software testing which we have adapted for the speci c purpose of testing IDSs. In this paper, we identify a set of general IDS performance objectives which is the basis for the methodology. We present the details of the methodology, including strategies for test-case selection and speci c testing procedures. We include quantitative results from testing experiments on the Network Security Monitor (NSM), an IDS developed at UC Davis. We present an overview of the software platform that we have used to create user-simulation scripts for testing experiments. The platform consists of the UNIX tool expect and enhancements that we have developed, including mechanisms for concurrent scripts and a record-and-replay feature. We also provide background information on intrusions and IDSs to motivate our work.

Assessment Methodology for Anomaly-Based Intrusion Detection in Cloud Computing
Cloud computing has become an attractive target for attackers as the mainstream technologies in the cloud, such as the virtualization and multitenancy, permit multiple users to utilize the same physical resource, thereby posing the so-called problem of internal facing security. Moreover, the traditional network-based intrusion detection systems (IDSs) are ineffective to be deployed in the cloud...
متن کاملMoving dispersion method for statistical anomaly detection in intrusion detection systems
A unified method for statistical anomaly detection in intrusion detection systems is theoretically introduced. It is based on estimating a dispersion measure of numerical or symbolic data on successive moving windows in time and finding the times when a relative change of the dispersion measure is significant. Appropriate dispersion measures, relative differences, moving windows, as well as tec...
متن کاملA hybridization of evolutionary fuzzy systems and ant Colony optimization for intrusion detection
A hybrid approach for intrusion detection in computer networks is presented in this paper. The proposed approach combines an evolutionary-based fuzzy system with an Ant Colony Optimization procedure to generate high-quality fuzzy-classification rules. We applied our hybrid learning approach to network security and validated it using the DARPA KDD-Cup99 benchmark data set. The results indicate t...

متن کاملA Parallel Genetic Algorithm Based Method for Feature Subset Selection in Intrusion Detection Systems
Intrusion detection systems are designed to provide security in computer networks, so that if the attacker crosses other security devices, they can detect and prevent the attack process. One of the most essential challenges in designing these systems is the so called curse of dimensionality. Therefore, in order to obtain satisfactory performance in these systems we have to take advantage of app...
